about

The Sawdust Boys are a rugged group of whittling wack-jobs that lurk around the dark alleys of the Kansas City metro area. This little suite of instrumental numbers is dedicated to them.

When I first started working on instruments, I went to meet up with these freaks every Tuesday. We'd drink beer, work on instruments and I learned a whole lot from them. I wrote and dedicated a song for each of them. Each song features an instrument made or owned by that person. So I played Will's mandolin for Will's tune, Jake's mando for Jake's tune, etc

Will is a sculptor and avid bicyclist, who also happens to build mandolins for fun in his spare time.

Jake is the youngest of the bunch and always strives for perfection in the mandolins he makes. He's very determined!

John is a woodworker by trade, who caught the mandolin bug a while back. He continues on a storied tradition that goes back from Kalamazoo to Cremona; i.e. the tradition of woodworkers building fine instruments.

Dr. Mike does not build instruments, but he has bought several instruments from the Sawdust Boys over the years and he's got a great taste in music, so we keep him around.

Mark is the dojo master of the group. He can build, fix and repair dang near anything. Also, he's always willing to lend a tool or give some advice. All of the Sawdust Boys owe him a lot.

Mary is Mark's better half. In the pre-covid times, the sawdust boys would meet up in her and Mark's basement. She's a singer and she puts up with all the racket, beer and sawdust. She's a girl, but she's still a sawdust boy in my book.

Special thanks go to Julie who was a real trooper as always and I owe her a lot. Without her help this project wouldn't be what it is.

I hope you enjoy listening to these tunes a fraction as much as I enjoy the people I wrote them for,
Andrew
