Andrew Morris - The Hot Mess

about

November 10, 2023. At a warehouse in Merriam, Kansas.

The Matchsellers hadn’t played together for a couple weeks and we were all stressed out. Brandon (Bass) is always playing in 50 different bands. He had a lot on his plate music-wise, but was also dealing with car problems and had a private issue with some of his friends. Brian (Mandolin) made it to the gig in the nick of time. He had food poisoning and was sweating bullets, barely able to stand up straight. Before the show he was in a back room knocking back moonshine trying to calm the rock in his stomach. Julie and I had been putting up our friend Stefan Prigmore for several days and working extra to make up for the fact that we were throwing this show. I was ushering people in, running sound, telling folks where the bathrooms were and trying to get ready to play. We were exhausted.

But there we were. I had a pile of books with quotes earmarked and a setlist. I told the band “Just improvise and try to musically follow the quotes”. That was as much prep as we had. We took the stage without a warm-up and had no idea if it would work. I kicked off almost every song significantly faster than usual. That’s a bad habit of mine when I get really excited at a show. Julie was skeptical of my idea, Brian was sick and Brandon was trying to roll with it. You’ll notice we mess up coming in at “Dalton Foundry”. And our first harmonies on the chorus of “Shaky Motor” are off, etc. I don’t think the crowd quite knew what to make of it. We didn’t quite know what to make of it.

During the last song, "The Hot Mess" I noticed a ladder was leaning against tall shelving behind us. Normally the top shelf would be filled with unset-up cellos. But at this moment, the shelf was empty. So I got the idea to climb up to the top of this shelf about 20 feet in the air. Julie handed me my guitar during an extra-long bass solo and we finished out the set. That’s why my vocals and guitar disappear towards the end of the recording of that song.

Thinking back on the Warehouse Show - I’ve never been inherently that great of a musician. But I want to be a musician, so I force the practice. I love it, but it is very challenging for me. And the older I get, the music is simultaneously harder and easier. It is harder because I don’t have the same time and energy I once had. But it’s easier, because I am a lot better at my craft and don’t care so much if people like it. That being said, I hope you like it. If you don't oh well. Maybe you'll like the next one... Andrew
